The problem was not the machine

A production line was missing its targets.

The first reaction was clear:

"The machine is the problem."

Maintenance was asked to reduce downtime.
Operators were asked to work more efficiently.
Extra checks were added.

But after looking closer, the machine was not the real problem.

The machine stopped because parts were not always available on time.
Maintenance was not always informed about recurring issues.
Production planning changed priorities too often.

Everyone was working hard.

But the flow between departments was slowing everything down.

This is something I see often in manufacturing.

The biggest losses are not always caused by one big problem.

Sometimes it is the small interruptions between people, processes and machines that reduce performance every day.

The first step is not changing.

The first step is understanding what is really happening.

Observe. Analyse. Identify. Restore. Improve.
